Jeans Advice and Top Denim Trends

Bootcut and skinny jean styles are still in. A jean jacket is a must have in your wardrobe to layer under a coat or wear on the weekends with your favorite skirt. Denim on denim?! Yes, you can wear it without looking silly. I even found a pair of overalls for the weekend without looking like a toddler.

Here are our picks, tips and advice for jeans, jackets and the best trends in denim right now.

Aidan Slouchy Boy Fit by J Brand, $240 Piperlime

Kimmie Contour Straight Leg in New Rinse, $169 7 For All Mankind

Boyfriend jeans? Yes, please. These are slightly loose and comfy like you just picked them up off the floor of your boyfriend's place and slipped them on. Boyfriend jeans are the thinking girl's version of sexy. But don't make the rest of your outfit schlumpy. Wear a cute top that's more fitted and a pair of thicker heels to show this outfit who's the boss. Also, I like "boyfriend" jeans to have a few rips.

Who can wear the straight jeans? I say - Anyone! These jeans are cut straight from the knee down, but are more forgiving than the ankle hugging skinny so they create better proportions. I perfer dark rinses since they work in your wardrobe for day and night outfits.

Denim on Denim

Many women wonder how to wear this fashionable look without looking like they’re headed for a rodeo. The key to getting it right is to pair different shades of denim and keep the style simple.  So skip trying to match the shades of your denim jacket and jeans. Also, definitely don’t wear an embellished jean jacket with a ruffled denim skirt.

Denim Overalls

I've surprised myself with this find. Had you asked me yesterday about overalls, I would have asked what size does your toddler wear? But then my friend Christos Garkinos shared his story about locking out Donatella Versace while renovating his luxury retail haven Decades and how he wore overalls while doing it. I thought there must be pair a gal over 35 years old can wear without looking like she's about to pick up a paint brush or pacifier. These dark wash ones from ASOS do the trick. Just add a striped top and Converse sneakers and you're good to go.

And then one of our contributors found a pair she adores.

Overalls have made a comeback in the fashion forefront and I absolutely love it! I wish I could fit into the pair I had as a kid, but I've fallen out of love with the bejeweled madness that went on in the early 90s. These dark wash, skinny fit overalls are certainly a more modern option to this Friday's flashback pick. Pair this look with heels and a structured leather embellished top for a night out or throw on a screen tee and Chuck Taylors for a day at school. For the 90s generation gals, who wouldn't want to throw a pair of these on and reminisce about the days of rocking out to Hansen with our crimped hair-dos?!

We Can't Let You leave Without Denim Pencil Skirts

I've always loved a longer length denim pencil skirt and it works even better with a little stretch to round out your booty and curves rather than smush them. These versions are ideal for pairing with a crisp white button down and black kitten heels or your favorite vintage rock band t-shirt and motorcycle ankle boots.

Beaded Denim Jacket, $34.80 Forever 21

This beaded collar denim jacket from Forever 21 is perfect for a night out! I love that dressy, yet comfy feel it has. I can see myself pairing it with some leggings, a loose tee, some booties...ahhh, so perfect! I may need to get this to wear out for my birthday coming up!

Denim Shirt Dress, $20 Pixie Market

As it gets cooler and jeans become the norm, I like to keep my denim a bit dressy. I love the flowy, flirty bottom on this dress to contrast the simple, straight-cut denim top. My favorite thing about denim is that it's an alternative "blank canvas" to black or white, so I add all sorts of flair and statement pieces to the top to really make this dress stand out.

Sequined Sweater, $80 Zara

It's the same every year, once the weather drops below 70 degrees, I start pulling out my favorite fall gear: leggings, boots, and cozy sweaters. I saw this lovely sweater from Zara on my recent European trip, and I am kinda mad at myself for not buying it then! It's perfectly cozy for staying warm in our California's "not quite" fall/winter season, but I am also loving the fun sequin & bow detail...so it's stylish and versatile.
