More Home Decor

We girls scour Pinterest and home decor magazines for ideas to add style to our homes and apartments. This week we wanted to share some of the latest decorative items we've bought or are considering! We've got pieces for a little light on the patio, an eye-popping room off the pool and even for when you're singing in the shower.

Alison's Pick

Classic Trellis Large Wallpaper in Tiffany Blue, $51 Hayneedle

We have a small second kitchen and full bath on the same level as our pool so guests can dash in and out for drinks, snacks and well, you know. The space used to be all white, but now one wall is covered with this peel-and-stick wallpaper and framed photographic artwork to give the room fully styled appeal.

Oversize Seagrass Basket, $129 West Elm

This basket is the perfect item to store all our blue patterned beach towels so guests can nab one for a day by our pool.

Antigua Tabletop Laterns, $10-$25 World Market

My hot summer nights call for unwinding after a long day on my back porch. Nothing relaxes me more than lighting a candle and burning my favorite incense. We're decking out our patio this summer in cool Mediterranean colors with a boho flair. I absolutely love these candle lanterns because they illuminate in different colors when you have the candles lit. I can't wait to set them up around our tiny porch to create the perfect at home oasis.

Spring Break Edition

This week brought me to San Antonio and Des Moines. In San Antonio, the riverfront was packed with tourists and restaurants had two hour waits for tables while  families were enjoying spring break with their young kids and the weather was ideal for a stroll. In Des Moines, there was still snow on the ground and this time the airports were packed with families and college students making an escape from the cold for their spring break. Since I'm no longer in my twenties, the term "Spring Break" for me is a far off memory, but we all get what it means- a chance to get away. So here's our picks for what would make it just a little bit finer whether it's a spring break, vacation or simply a day at the beach.

Alison's Pick

Joie Louisa Woven Tote, $118 Shopbop

Good price, sassy tote! This is the ideal tote for packing your towel, sunscreen, hat, book and water bottle for a day at the beach or just loounging by the pool.

In addition to the heavenly pattern, it's got a natural, flattering fit, a keyhole in the back, and - my favorite - pockets for your passport and pesos!

So LA Nail Wraps, $16 NCLA

Midterms have taken over my life these past two weeks and I am dying for a break! I shaped, filed and wrapped my nails in NCLA palm tree nail wraps to keep me motivated while I study. They're the perfect pick me up during the stress of finals, papers and tests. As I type those long papers my nails give me the motivational reminder that my Spring Break is only a month away!

As the holidays are are about to begin, my thoughts turn to the decorated windows at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC (always a winner for creativity), Christmas caroling with my family and neighbors (yes, we actually did that for several years) and reminiscing about the time my mom and I were "ladies of the court" in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC dancing along a float carrying Olympic skaters, Brian Botano and Katarina Witt. And, of course, filling my belly with plenty of pie!

Holidays On Ice by David Sedaris, $8 Amazon

David is one of my favorites and every year around the holidays I'm pulled back into re-reading this book of short stories. You could read it in an hour. If you haven't read this book or any of Sedaris' book, guaranteed you'll become a fan. If you're not a fan, then we obviously don't share the same sense of humor.  David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow"); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations ("Six to Eight Black Men"); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like ("The Monster Mash"); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry ("Cow and Turkey").

Day Trip Darling Dress, $252 ModCloth

An adorable dress with a storybook ending! This dress, designed by Poppy London, is lined with the illustrated adventures of little girl Poppy and her playful pup Fred. The dress can be worn with the neckline shown for a vintage look, or flipped around for a v-neckline. Even cooler, each dress is shipped with a paperback book which tells the tale that's played out on the dress. What could be better than a dress that literally comes with it's own story!

OPI 3 Piece Nail Polish set, $18 Amazon

I have a slight addiction with collecting nail polish and doing my own manicures. As soon as I saw these new OPI colors, I had to have them. The oxblood red is definitely what sold me. It comes as a set so you get to mix and match these great colors. The colors are so rich and perfect to wear at your next holiday party. I love that it comes as a box set so you can gift it for your Secret Santa or use them as a great stocking stuffer.

Rockstar Pop-Color Cords, $35 Old Navy

These red corduroy skinnies from Old Navy are just what I need to make our family holiday photos "pop" this year. Plus you can't beat the price!! Typically, I am not a fan of corduroy (bad 80s flashbacks), but with the low rise and slim cut of these make corduroy cute again!

Work, weekends, and party invites from cocktails to black tie can take a toll on your bank account. Jeans and a t-shirt doesn't work when you want to climb the career ladder nor does it make an impact when you want to look stylish on the weekend. Then come the party invites that sometime require spy technology to decode the dress code. One of our readers, Rolanda, reached out to us in need of styling advice. Her challenge:

*Help her add some flair to her wardrobe

*Suggest pieces that work double duty in her wardrobe

*Choose items all under $100

*She's a curvy girl, so be sure items come in her size

Here's our suggestions to add some sass to her style:

Imagine Me and Meow Dress $57.99 at ModCloth

Nevermind that Labor Day has come and gone. I'll wear my whites until I run outta bleach to wash them. If you know anything about me, you know I LOVE the cats, and this kitty adorned dress is too adorable to pass up for fall. It goes well with flats, or a black pair of boots for the season, and it's great to wear to work or dress up for a date (Imagine me and meow...).

Colaterl Leather Riding Boot, Steve Madden $110

I like summer, but I most definitley LOVE fall, partly because I have an obsession with boots and coats. These Steve Madden riding boots are haunting me in my sleep and are on my must-have list for fall fashion. The boots are all leather, so they'll last through the cold winter months and then some. I find it hard to find knee high boots because, frankly, they won't fit over my dancer calves. These are perfect because they have elastic around the top rim of the boot so it'll be a lot more comfortable as I'm stepping on all of the fallen crunchy leaves.

Our top picks to rev up your fingers on the keyboards and get them ready to click and shop: A stylish jacket from Rebecca Minkoff that's so versatile, you'll wish you could find a guy that so easily fits in your life like this fits in your wardrobe. More hair accessories, since we women can always have a better day if our hair looks coifed, our nod to The Beatles and the bag our intern is coveting for her busy schedule this fall.

Alison's Pick

Rebecca Minkoff "Jimmy" Jacket, $398

I love a good jacket! Something that makes a simple tank and jeans look even better.  A jacket that can be worn with pants and just as easily transition to evening attire with a ball gown or full skirt and a smattering of eye catching jewels. A jacket that becomes my go-to piece in my closet because I can always count on it to make me look good. I expect of this jacket some similar traits of a good man. And both require loving care. Thankfully, I've got a very good man and the jacket is on my wish list.

E-GO Leather Laptop Tote, Career Bags $250

The story of my college life continues as the "Intern on the Go" this upcoming fall semester. With school almost two weeks away, I need a bag to carry all the necessary work items and my laptop. I was searching for functionality and style--it needed to look like a purse but work as a backpack. I've had my days of cheap $40 bags breaking on my way to class, so investing in a quality bag will save me (and could save you) embarrasment and frustration. The fact that this is a leather bag makes it not only stylish but doable to get me through my work days.

Parasol Her Standing There Tee, ModCloth  $40

The SPICE was nice at Sunday's closing ceremony, but the five gals of girl power take a silver behind The Beatles.

Happiness is a warm tee-shirt adorned with the Fab Four just tryin' to keep dry. There's Something in the Way the sleeves flow on (within you and without you) and it'll all Come Together nicely with a pair of skinny jeans or a mini skirt. Okay, enough with the song references already, before I need to seek Help!

Amika Triple Barrel Curler set, Sephora $175

Ever since I discovered the awesomeness of the clip-less curling iron, I have been wanting to style my hair much more often than normal.

It "almost" makes me look how I do when I see my hair stylist..."almost". The only bummer was that my Sultra curling iron had one barrel size, and I want curl variety. That is why I must have this curler set from Amika! It has 3 different size barrels, so I have lots to play with...but it's tourmaline technology also protects your hair from heat damage. I seriously need this like yesterday!!
