How To Sleep Better During The Holidays

Between finding the perfect gift, meeting end of year work deadlines, and entertaining guests (even some unexpected ones), the holidays can quickly become a time of high stress and late nights. One thing that often suffers as a result is a lack of SLEEP. Here are a few tips on how to sleep better during the holidays.

A new mattress always helps lead to a better night’s sleep. Our guest room mattress was 10 years old so it was time for a replacement. I certainly didn’t want to stress about it or spend hours shopping in stores so I shopped online and found tulo mattress. More below on the easy shopping experience.

Here’s me quite happy after receiving our new mattress. It felt so comfy I slept in it before our friends arrived for a visit.

How To Sleep Better During The Holidays

Stick to your normal sleep routine

You’ve likely heard this tip before, but it does help. Try to go to bed and wake up close to the same time every day, even on weekends and holidays. Stay consistent to reinforce your sleep-wake cycle.

Avoid eating within 2 hours of bedtime

This may be one of the hardest tips on the list to stick to. After all, one of the best parts of the holidays is all the delicious food but it can make your body work harder as you sleep rather than repairing and refreshing itself overnight.

Make your bedroom (and your guest bedrooms) your sanctuary

Minimize noise, light a candle, and dim the lights when you’re getting ready for bed. Have a diffuser with essential oils, close the blinds and eliminate ambient light.

And if you have kids they’re probably excited about the holidays and find it hard to sleep too. If you allow them to spend the night in bed with you, all of you are less likely to sleep well. Read them a story in your bed and then settle them into their bed for the night.

Now onto the most important part: THE BED

To sleep well means choosing the right mattress for the best night’s sleep based on your comfort needs.

How To Sleep Better During The Holidays

Avoid alcohol and caffeine

For at least 4 hours before bedtime skip caffeine or you may have a hard time getting to sleep.

Keep your mind calm and anxiety-free at bedtime

POWER DOWN! Put the phones away and focus on spending time together whether it’s playing games or choosing a holiday movie to watch with a cup of cocoa.

Don’t forget to turn OFF the electronics and Christmas lights before bedtime.

Get plenty of exercise

Keep up with your routine. While it may be tempting to take a few days (weeks) off and slide into your New Year’s resolutions, don’t do it. If the gym has lost it’s appeal during the holidays then get out with other people and enjoy some outdoor activities like a hike, ice skating or building a snowman or a snow family.

Learn a relaxing technique

Guided visualization – lie in bed and tell your body to relax from head to toe, meditation or an oldie but a goodie: count yourself to sleep – backwards from 100.
